Course Overview
The Aerospace Engineering BEng (Hons) is a three-year full-time degree programme based at the University of Brighton's Moulsecoomb campus. Accredited by three of the UK's most respected engineering bodies — the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) — this degree prepares you for a professional engineering career in aerospace, defence, and beyond.
The programme is ranked 4th in the UK for aerospace engineering courses by the Guardian University Guide 2026, 8th in the UK for teaching, and 9th for academic support in the National Student Survey 2025.
What You Will Study
You will work alongside innovative researchers and fellow engineering students on challenging real-world projects — from fighting robots and rocket cars to the international Engineering Without Borders challenge. The curriculum is shaped by industry professionals who visit regularly to share their experience through guest lectures, and you will have access to specialist facilities including flight and car simulators, a wind tunnel, prototyping labs, CNC machines, and robotics and VR labs.
A student-led Sustainable Technology and Engineering Projects (STEP) lab gives you the opportunity to work on live energy challenges, while researchers with expertise in thermal efficiency of propulsion systems and microgravity research with the European Space Agency bring cutting-edge knowledge directly into your studies.
Placement Year
The programme offers an optional placement year in Year 3, extending the degree to four years. This gives you 12 months of real industry experience before your final year — a significant advantage when entering the job market. The university actively supports students in securing placements, including CV preparation and position finding. Previous students have gone on placement with organisations such as BAE Systems.
Your Career as an Engineer
On successful completion of this degree, you will be eligible to apply for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status. With further study and experience, you can progress to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status — one of the most respected professional qualifications in engineering globally.
Professional accreditation from RAeS, IMechE, and IET ensures your qualification is recognised by employers in the UK and internationally, including countries that are signatories to international engineering accords.
